हिन्दी फ़िल्मों और टेलीविज़न शोज़ का वो एक जाना-पहचाना चेहरा हैं, भले ही दर्शक उनके नाम से उतना परिचित न हों| अपनी उम्र के अनुरूप वो अक्सर दादी और मां की भूमिका में नज़र आती हैं, और संभवतः ऐसी एक अकेली कलाकार हैं, जो उम्र के साढ़े आठ दशक पार कर लेने के बावजूद अभिनय के क्षेत्र में आज भी पूरे जोशोख़रोश के साथ सक्रिय हैं| वो हैं, 87 साल की श्रीमती सुनीता शिरोले|
सुनीता जी से मेरा परिचय क़रीब 20-22 साल पहले अंधेरी (पूर्व) के नटराज स्टूडियो में, रामानंद सागर के किसी टी.वी. धारावाहिक की शूटिंग के दौरान हुआ था| मुंबई आये उन्हें ज़्यादा समय नहीं हुआ था और इस महानगर में अभिनय की उनकी ये शुरूआत ही थी| बातचीत के दौरान सुनीता जी ने संघर्षों से भरी अपनी ज़िंदगी और ज़िंदगी को बदल देने वाले एक बड़े हादसे के बारे में बताया तो मुझे उनके जीवट और जुझारूपन पर बेहद आश्चर्य हुआ था|

क़रीब 3 साल बाद वो डी.डी. वन पर प्रसारित होने वाले, 'बालाजी टेलीफ़िल्म्स' के सुपरडुपर हिट सस्पेंस थ्रिलर शो 'क़यामत' में नज़र आयीं| संयोग से मैं उस शो में हिरोईन के पिता का रोल कर रहा था, लेकिन चूंकि हमारा कोई भी सीन साथ में नहीं था इसलिए 'क़यामत' के शूट के दौरान उनसे मेरी मुलाक़ात नहीं हुई| उधर गुज़रते वक़्त के साथ मेरी व्यस्तताओं ने एक अलग ही दिशा ले ली जो आज आपके सामने है| बरसों बाद सुनीता जी से एक बार फिर से मुलाक़ात हुई और वो अवसर था, 'सिने एंड टी.वी. आर्टिस्ट एसोसिएशन-सिंटा' की बीते 1 मई को हुई सालाना आमसभा, जिसमें मैं क़रीब 6 सालों बाद गया था| इन दो दशकों में सुनीता जी फ़िल्मों और धारावाहिकों की दुनिया में पूरी तरह स्थापित होकर एक जाना-पहचाना चेहरा बन चुकी थीं| उस रोज़ उनसे थोड़ी-बहुत बातचीत हुई, पुरानी यादें ताज़ा हुईं, और फिर हाल ही में 'बीते हुए दिन' के लिए उनका इंटरव्यू भी संपन्न हो गया|

सुनीता शिरोले का जन्म 13 जनवरी 1936 को नागपुर में एक मराठा (मराठी क्षत्रिय) परिवार में हुआ था| उनके पिता रेलवे में इंजन ड्राईवर थे और मां आम गृहिणी| दो बहनों और एक भाई में सुनीता जी मातापिता की सबसे बड़ी संतान थीं| मायके से उनका नाम सुशीला देशमुख था| नागपुर से बी.ए. करने के बाद उन्होंने मुम्बई आकर समाजशास्त्र में और फिर वापस नागपुर से अंग्रेज़ी में एम.ए. किया और इस तरह डबल एम.ए. कहलायीं|
सुनीता शिरोले अर्थात सुशीला देशमुख को बचपन से ही अभिनय का बेहद शौक़ था| वो नवरात्रों और दशहरे पर होने वाले सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रमों में हिस्सा लेती थीं, अभिनय करती थीं, गाती थीं और ये तमाम गुण उन्हें अपनी मां से मिले थे| लेकिन पिता इन गतिविधियों के बिल्कुल खिलाफ़ थे| उधर सुनीता जी बतौर बालकलाकार एक थिएटरग्रुप से जुड़ गयीं तो स्कूल-कॉलेज के नाटकों में भी लगातार हिस्सा लेती रहीं| एक बांग्लाभाषी सहेली से बांग्ला सीखी और बंगाली नाटक भी करने लगीं| उन्होंने संस्कृत और मारवाड़ी नाटकों में भी काम किया|

एम.ए. करने के बाद सुनीता जी एक कॉलेज में समाजशास्त्र पढ़ाने लगी थीं| उसी कॉलेज में रमेश शिरोले नाम के इतिहास के एक प्रोफेसर थे| वो अपने घर में सुनीता जी की बहुत तारीफ़ करते थे कि कॉलेज में एक नयी लड़की आयी है जो बहुत टेलेंटेड है| रमेश शिरोले के बड़े भाई जयकृष्ण शिरोले उदयपुर के एक कॉलेज में अंग्रेज़ी पढ़ाते थे| छोटे भाई की बातों ने उनके मन में उत्सुकता पैदा की, उन्होंने एक रोज़ दूर से ही सुनीता जी को देखा और ऐलान कर दिया कि मैं इसी लड़की से शादी करूंगा|
सुनीता जी बताती हैं, “वो मुझसे मिले, हमारी दोस्ती हुई और हमने शादी कर ली| परम्परानुसार सुशीला देशमुख की जगह मुझे नया नाम 'सुनीता शिरोले' मिला, जो आज मेरी पहचान है| मेरे पति मूल रूप से वर्धा के एक रईस ज़मींदार परिवार से थे| मेरे ससुर जी आई.जी. पुलिस के पद से रिटायर होने के बाद मुम्बई में बस गए थे और मफतलाल मिल्स में बतौर सलाहकार काम कर रहे थे| मेरे पति भी उदयपुर की नौकरी छोड़कर अब मफतलाल मिल्स में बतौर असिस्टेंट मैनेजर ज्वाइन करने वाले थे| लेकिन ऐसा हो नहीं पाया| मेरे ससुरालपक्ष ने हमारा बायकॉट कर दिया, क्योंकि उनके संभ्रांत ब्राह्मण ख़ानदान को क्षत्रिय बहू स्वीकार्य नहीं थी| मेरे ससुर जी ने हमें साफ़ शब्दों में कह दिया था कि कहीं भी जाओ, मुम्बई लौटकर मत आना| ऐसे में साल 1962 में शादी के तुरंत बाद हम दोनों दिल्ली चले आए, ज़िंदगी को नए सिरे से शुरू करने के लिए|”
सुनीता जी कहती हैं, "दिल्ली में मैंने शिक्षिका की नौकरी के लिए बहुत कोशिश की लेकिन निराशा ही हाथ लगी, क्योंकि यहां एम. ए. के साथ पी.एच.डी. की भी अनिवार्यता थी| ऐसे में मैंने रेडियो पर मराठी न्यूज़ रीडर, अशोका होटल में सेल्स में, पेट्रोल पम्प पर पी.आर.ओ. जैसे काम करने के बाद बतौर रिसर्च ऑफ़िसर श्रीराम फ़र्टिलाईज़र्स एंड कैमिकल्स कंपनी ज्वाइन की और साल 1995 में असिस्टेंट मैनेजर के पद से रिटायर हुई| उधर मेरे पति ने उषा सिलाई मशीन का मार्केटिंग डिविज़न ज्वाइन किया था और वो भी 1995 में रिटायर हुए थे|”
सुनीता जी ने दिल्ली में, साल 1964 में थिएटर ग्रुप 'अदाकार' की नींव रखी थी| इसका पहला नाटक 'निर्मला' था, जो मुंशी प्रेमचंद के इसी नाम के उपन्यास पर आधारित था| 'अदाकार' के बैनर में साल 1964 से 1984 तक के उन दो दशकों में 'पैसा बोलता है', 'मौसम बेईमान', ‘अमीर ग़रीब' जैसे दर्जनों नाटक हुए और सराहे गए| 'अदाकार' के अध्यक्ष वी.के.हरूरे भी मूलरूप से महाराष्ट्र के रहने वाले थे और केंद्र सरकार के किसी मंत्रालय में ऊंचे पद पर थे| सुनीता जी के अनुसार रंगमंच के क्षेत्र में उन्हें पति जयकृष्ण शिरोले का पूरा सहयोग मिला, जो 'अदाकार' के महासचिव भी थे|
उधर दिल्ली में होने वाली रामलीलाओं में भी सुनीता जी लगातार सीता से लेकर कैकई और शबरी तक की भूमिकाएं कर रही थीं| रंगमंच की एक पेशेवर अभिनेत्री के तौर पर उनका बहुत नाम था| दिल्ली के जाने माने रंगकर्मी रमेश मेहता के ग्रुप 'थ्री आर्ट्स क्लब’ के साथ साथ सुनीता जी ने 'फाइव आर्ट्स सेंटर’, 'डी.सी.एम. ड्रामैटिक क्लब' और 'डी.सी.एम.’ की दिल्ली के अलावा बाहर की भी कई इकाईयों के नाटकों में काम किया| 1960 के दशक में वो दो बेटों की मां भी बन गयी थीं| उनके बड़े बेटे राजेश का जन्म साल 1963 में और छोटे बेटे शैलेश का जन्म 1966 में हुआ|
सुनीता शिरोले जी कहती हैं, “मेरे जीवन की सबसे मुश्किल भूमिका रही, नाटक 'राजा भर्तृहरि' में रानी पिंगला की| अलवर (राजस्थान) के 'अलवर क्लब' का ये नाटक डेढ़ सौ सालों से लगातार मंचित होता आ रहा था और मुझे इस भूमिका के लिये ख़ासतौर से आमंत्रित किया गया था| ये वो दौर था जब लगभग रोज़ ही मेरे शोज़ होते थे और कभी कभी तो सालभर में नाटकों की संख्या 40 तक भी पहुंच जाती थी| उस दौरान मैंने पैसा भी ख़ूब कमाया और एक वक़्त ऐसा आया, जब दिल्ली में मैंने अपनी सातवीं प्रॉपर्टी ख़रीदी| लेकिन अचानक ही वक़्त ने करवट ले ली|”
दरअसल, जैसा कि सुनीता जी बताती हैं, साल 1984 में इंदिरा गांधी की हत्या के बाद बदले हुए हालात में 'अदाकार' की चमक फीकी पड़ने लगी थी और जल्द ही उसे बंद कर देना पड़ा था| उधर साल 1995 में रिटायरमेंट के बाद शिरोले दंपत्ति ने गिफ्ट आईटम्स का बिज़नेस शुरू किया जो बहुत अच्छा चल निकला| लेकिन महज़ 5 साल बाद, साल 2000 में उनके गोदाम में आग लग गयी जिसमें सबकुछ बरबाद हो गया| बकौल सुनीता शिरोले जी, “हम सड़क पर आ गए थे| कर्ज़ उतारने के लिए मुझे ओल्ड राजेंद्रनगर वाले मकान को छोड़कर बाक़ी तमाम प्रॉपर्टी बेच देनी पड़ी| वो मकान आज भी हमारे पास है| साल 2000 में मैं ज़िंदगी को नये सिरे से शुरू करने के लिए 64 साल की उम्र में अकेली ही मुम्बई चली आयी|”
सुनीता जी की डेब्यू फ़िल्म साल 1998 की 'मेजर साब' थी जो उन्होंने दिल्ली में रहते हुए की थी| मुम्बई आकर सुनीता जी ने रामानंद सागर के टी.वी. शो 'हातिमताई' से शुरूआत की, और फिर 'अंधेर नगरी चौपट राजा', ‘किस देस में है मेरा दिल', ‘क़यामत', ‘कोई आने को है', ‘क्राइम पेट्रोल' जैसे टी.वी.शोज़, और वेब सीरीज 'दिल्ली क्राइम' उनके खाते में जुड़ते चले गए| उधर फिल्मों का सिलसिला भी शुरू हो गया था| 'उतरन' और 'दिल है तुम्हारा' उनकी शुरूआती फ़िल्में थीं, लेकिन 'उतरन' रिलीज़ नहीं हुई और 'दिल है तुम्हारा' साल 2002 में रिलीज़ हुई भी तो सुनीता जी का 22 दिन का पूरा काम ही फ़िल्म से निकाला जा चुका था| फ़िल्म 'बजरंगी भाईजान' में वो करीना कपूर की दादी बनीं| ‘दो दूनी चार', ‘डरना मना है', ‘डरना ज़रूरी है', ‘सात उचक्के', ‘पोस्टर बॉयज’, 'तान्हाजी', 'थैंक गॉड', ‘मुम्बई मेरी जान', ‘हॉलिडे' जैसी दर्जनों फ़िल्में उन्होंने कीं|
बीते 13 जनवरी को 87 साल की हो चुकीं सुनीता शिरोले के आत्मविश्वास और जुझारूपन का ही नतीजा है कि वो एक बार मौत से भी जंग जीतकर लौटी हैं| दरअसल साल 2010 में वो गंभीर रूप से बीमार पड़ीं और एक रोज़ उनकी सांसें चलनी बंद हो गयीं| उन्हें मृत घोषित कर दिया गया| लेकिन 10 मिनट तक सांस, धड़कन और नब्ज़ के पूरी तरह बंद रहने के बाद उन्होंने आंखें खोलीं और कुछ ही दिनों में पूरी तरह स्वस्थ होकर वो फिर से अभिनय के मैदान में आ गयीं| इसी तरह साल 2021 में हुई एक दुर्घटना में टांग के फ्रेक्चर हो जाने की वजह से उन्हें 3 महीने व्हीलचेयर पर रहना पड़ा था| लेकिन उसी हालत में उन्होंने ‘थैंक गॉड’, हाल ही में रिलीज़ हुई 'ल वास्ते' और 'मजनू सलून' जैसी फ़िल्में कीं|
सुनीता जी के पति जयकृष्ण शिरोले साल 2003 में गुज़रे| उनके दोनों बेटे अपने पत्नी-बच्चों के साथ दिल्ली में रहते हैं| बड़े बेटे राजेश का गिफ्ट आयटम्स का बिज़नेस है और छोटा बेटा शैलेश एक प्राइवेट कंपनी में नौकरी करता है|
सुनीता शिरोले जी को अब चलने-फिरने के लिए वॉकर का सहारा लेना पड़ता है| लेकिन इस हालत में भी वो लगातार काम कर रही हैं| हाल ही के दिनों में उन्होंने अमूल बटर और ज़ोमैटो समेत 7 विज्ञापन फ़िल्में की हैं| तमाम शारीरिक परेशानियों के बावजूद आज भी उनके जीवट, जोश और जुझारूपन में कहीं कोई कमी नहीं आयी है, जिसे देखकर उनकी सही उम्र पर यक़ीन करना वाकई मुश्किल हो जाता है|

She is a well-known face of Hindi films and TV shows, though audience may not be familiar with her name. In keeping with her age, she is often seen in the roles of mother and grandmother. Probably, she is the only woman actor active with gusto in her late eighties. Yes, we are talking about 87-year-old Sunita Shirole.
I met Sunita Shirole for the first time some 20-22 years back at Natraj Studio - Andheri (East), during the shoot of Ramanand Sagar’s TV serial, when she was new to Mumbai and was beginning to find her moorings in the city. She shared a slice of her life, full of struggle, tragedy and turmoil. I was amazed at her guts and grit.
Three years later I saw her on D.D.-1 in Balaji Telefilms’ super-duper hit thriller show ‘Qayamat’. Coincidentally, I was playing the role of leading lady’s father but since we did not have any scene together so I could not meet her. Later my engagements moved to a different direction, which everybody knows today. Years later, I met Sunita Shirole recently on 1st May this year, and the occasion was the Annual General Meeting of CINTAA (Cine and TV Artist Association). I was attending this meeting after a lapse of 6 years. Sunita Shirole by now was an established known face of the industry through her films and TV serials. We had a small talk that day recapitulating the old memories and later, there followed a full-fledged interview for ‘Beete Hue Din’.
Sunita Shirole was born on 13th January 1936 to a Maratha (Marathi Kshatriya) family in Nagpur. Her father was a Railway Engine driver and mother a home maker. She was the eldest of two sisters and a brother. Her maiden name was Sushila Deshmukh. She got her education till graduation level in Nagpur and earned her Master’s degree first in Sociology from Mumbai University and then in English literature from Nagpur University, eventually to be called a ‘Double MA’.
Sunita Shirole nee Sushila Deshmukh was fond of acting since her childhood. She would actively participate in the festivities of Navratri and Dusshera festivals, she used to act and sing proficiently, the quality she imbibed from her mother, though her father was against all this. As a child artist Sunita got associated with a Children Theatre group and participated in her school/college plays. She learned Bangla language from her Bangla speaking friend and took part in Bangla plays as well. She played active roles even in Sanskrit and Marwari dramas.
After her post-graduation Sunita ji took to teaching Sociology in a college. There was this History Professor Ramesh Shirole in the same college. He would, at his home, praise this ‘new girl’ in college who was immensely talented. Ramesh Shirole’s elder brother Jai Krishna Shirole, a Professor of English literature in an Udaipur college got curious and saw Sunita ji from a distance. He declared at home ‘I shall marry this girl’.
Sunita ji describes “We met, we became friends and we got married. As per custom I was rechristened Sunita Shirole, which is my identity today. My husband hailed from a rich land lord family of Wardha. My would be father in law retired from the post of Inspector General of Police. After retirement the family had settled in Mumbai and he had taken up the assignment of an Advisor in Mafatlal Textiles Mills. My husband had already left his Udaipur job and was to join Mafatlal Textiles Mills as an Assistant manager, but that was not to be. My in-laws boycotted us as this Kshatriya bride wasn’t welcome into their elite Brahmin clan. My father in law clearly told us to go anywhere but not to come back to Mumbai ever. Thus, after our marriage in 1962, we relocated to Delhi to start the life afresh.”
Sunita ji continues “In Delhi, I tried hard to get a job of a teacher but could not succeed, as the M.A. degree was not sufficient and Ph.D. was an essential qualification for the same. Thereafter, I joined Radio as a Marathi news reader, changed several jobs from Sales department of Hotel Ashoka to PRO on a Petrol Pump. Finally, I joined Shriram Fertilizers & Chemicals as a Research Officer. I retired from the post of Assistant Manager in the year 1995. My husband had joined Marketing division of the Usha Sewing Machines, he too retired in 1995”.
Sunita ji founded a Theatre group ‘Adakaar’ in Delhi in 1964. The first play of this group was ‘Nirmala’ based on Munshi Premchand’s famous novel with the same name. Under the banner of Adakaar, dozens of plays viz ‘Paisa Bolta Hai’, ‘Mausam Be-imaan’ ‘Ameer-Ghareeb’ were produced and successfully staged in the coming two decades from 1964 to 1984. Adakaar group’s Chairperson Mr. V.K. Harure was also a Maharashtrian gentleman who worked in some Ministry of the Government of India in a senior position. Sunita ji emphasizes, she got full cooperation and encouragement from her husband Jaikrishna Shirole who was the Secretary of Adakaar.
Sunita ji was also a regular in various Ramlila shows in Delhi. She would play different roles from Sita to Kaikayi and Shabari. As a professional theater artist, she had established quite a name for herself in Delhi theater circle. Besides famous theater personality Ramesh Mehta’s group ‘Three Arts club’, Sunita ji also worked for ‘Five Arts Centre’ and ‘D.C.M. Dramatic Club’, and also participated in the plays of D.C.M.’s other units located out of Delhi. Meanwhile the decade of 1960 saw her in the new role of real-life mother as well. Her eldest son Rajesh was born in 1963 and the younger one, Shailesh was born in 1966.
Sunita Shirole recalls “My life’s most difficult role was that of Rani Pingla in the play ‘Raja Bhratrihari’. Alwar (Rajasthan)’s Alwar Club had been staging this play regularly for the last 150 years. I was especially invited for this role. This was the period when my shows were being staged almost daily. Sometimes the number of plays I participated in a year would reach upto 40. My earnings were decent and there was a time when I bought the seventh property in Delhi. But then suddenly the times changed.
After the assassination of Mrs. Indira Gandhi in 1984, what followed had struck a fatal blow to Adakaar resulting into the closure of thegroup. Having both of us retired in 1995, we launched a business of Gift items. It started off to a great start. But in the year 2000 there was this fire in our warehouse, which destroyed us completely. We found ourselves on road. In order to pay back the business loans, I had to sell off all the properties barring a house in Old Rajendra Nagar, which is still in our possession. To start the life afresh, I shifted to Mumbai all by myself in the year 2000, at the age of 64.
‘Major Saab’ released in 1998 was Sunita ji’s debut film which she did while still in Delhi. Having landed in Mumbai, Sunita ji began her innings on TV with Ramanand Sagar’s serial ‘Hatimtai’, followed by dozens of other shows viz. ‘Andher Nagri Chaupat Raja’, ‘Kis Desh Me Hai Mera Dil’, ‘Qayamat’ ‘Koi Aane ko hai’ ‘Crime Patrol’ and the web series ‘Delhi Crime’. Meanwhile she also made a beginning in the films with ‘Uttran’ and ‘Dil Hai Tumhara’. But the film ‘Uttran’ remained unreleased while 22 days shoot went in vain when her entire role got chopped off from the 2002 release ‘Dil Hai Tumhara’. She played grandmother of Kareena Kapoor in ‘Bajarangi Bhaijaan’. ‘Do Dooni Chaar’, ‘Darna Mana Hai’, ‘Darna Zaroori Hai’, ‘Saat Uchakke’, ‘Poster Boys’, ‘Tanhaji’, ‘Thank God’, ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’, ‘Holiday’ were among dozens of films, that she acted in.
Sunita Shirole, who turned 87 on 13 January 2023, also survived a near death serious ailment with her sheer self-confidence and courage. In 2010 she fell seriously ill, so much so her breathing stopped, her pulse stopped and she was declared dead. It was nothing short of miracle that after full ten minutes she reopened her eyes, recovered and soon was back to acting. In 2021 she fractured her leg in an accident and was confined to wheel chair for three months. She completed her films ‘Thank God’, recently released ‘La Vaste’ and ‘Majnu Saloon’ while still confined to the wheel chair.
Sunita Shirole’s husband Jai Krishna Shirole passed away in 2003. Both her sons live in Delhi with their families. Elder son Rajesh has a business of Gift items. Younger son Shailesh works for a private company. Sunita ji moves around with the aid of a walker but she is still active and has recently worked in as many as seven ad films including that of Amul Butter and Zomato. Overcoming her physical limitations, her courage, fierce determination to live with dignity, enthusiasm, and guts defy her actual age.
