“जाने-पहचाने चेहरे वाला एक अनजाना कलाकार”- प्रेम सागर

सिनेमा के इतिहास में ऐसे बेशुमार कलाकार हुए जो परदे पर लगातार नज़र आते रहे, उनका चेहरा बेहद आम और पहचाना हुआ था, लेकिन वो कौन थे, कहां से आए थे और कहां चले गये, ये सवाल हमेशा के लिए पीछे छोड़कर वो गुमनामी में खो गये| ऐसे ही कलाकारों की तलाश में 'बीते हुए दिन' जुटा रहा, आज भी जुटा हुआ है और आने वाले समय में भी अपनी इस मुहिम को यथासंभव जारी रखेगा|

इन्हीं जाने-पहचाने चेहरे वाले अनजाने कलाकारों में शामिल थे प्रेम सागर, जिन्हें अगर नाम से कुछ लोग जानते भी हैं तो वो समझते हैं कि प्रेम सागर जानेमाने निर्माता-निर्देशक-लेखक रामानंद सागर के बेटे थे| लेकिन ये धारणा सही नहीं है| दरअसल रामानंद सागर के बेटे का नाम भी प्रेम सागर है, लेकिन एक ही नाम के ये दो अलग व्यक्ति हैं|
अभिनेता प्रेम सागर मुम्बई के सुदूर पूर्वी उपनगर कल्याण में रहते हैं, आने वाले अगस्त के महीने में वो 99 साल के होने जा रहे हैं, और इन दिनों बेहद बीमार हैं| उनसे मेरी मुलाक़ात और 'बीते हुए दिन' के लिए बातचीत कल्याण के उनके घर पर 27 अप्रैल 2018 को हुई थी|
महाराष्ट्र का अमरावती, बुलढाना, नागपुर और यवतमाल का इलाक़ा उस ज़माने में हैदराबाद रियासत का हिस्सा हुआ करता था| हैदराबाद के निज़ाम ने प्रेम सागर जी के दादा को पुसद, बोरी और काटखेड़ा की जागीरदारी सौंप दी थी| वर्त्तमान में ये सब महाराष्ट्र के यवतमाल जिले का हिस्सा हैं|
महाराष्ट्र के ही वाशिम ज़िले के रिसोड़ क़स्बे में प्रेम सागर जी के दादा का बनवाया एक दोमंज़िला मकान था| प्रेम सागर के पिता रिसोड़ में रहकर कपड़े का कारोबार करते थे| प्रेम सागर की मां हैदराबाद की थीं| प्रेम सागर का जन्म 14 अगस्त 1924 को रिसोड़ में हुआ था| 9 भाई और 3 बहनों में वो चौथे नंबर पर थे| रिसोड़ से ही उन्होंने उर्दू में 7वीं तक पढ़ाई की थी|
प्रेम सागर कहते हैं, "अचानक ही एक रोज़ अंग्रेज़ों ने हमारी जागीरें छीन लीं| मकान-दुकान भी हमारे हाथ से निकल गये और अब्बा का कारोबार ठप्प हो गया| मेरी सबसे बड़ी बहन के शौहर निज़ाम की आर्मी में कैप्टेन थे| हमारे हालात देखकर बहन ने हम सबको हैदराबाद बुला लिया| मैं उस वक़्त 12 बरस का था| मुझे साईकिलों की मरम्मत की एक दुकान पर काम पर लगा दिया गया| उधर 3 साल के अन्दर अब्बा चल बसे और हम बेसहारा हो गये| 18 साल का हुआ तो मेरे जीजा ने मुझे आर्मी में भरती करा दिया| मैं 19वीं बटालियन में शामिल हुआ, कुल 9 बटालियनों के बीच हुए निशानेबाज़ी के एक मुक़ाबले में अव्वल आया, हमारे अंग्रेज़ अफ़सर कर्नल रिचविच ने ख़ुश होकर मुझे सौ रूपये इनाम और 8 दिन की छुट्टी दी और अपने जूनियर अफ़सर कैप्टेन हबीब को बुलाकर कहा, इस बच्चे को नामपल्ली के आर्मी ट्रेनिंग स्कूल में दाख़िला दिला दो| मुझे स्कूल में 3 महीने का कोर्स करना था जिसके बाद मैं सीधे लेफ्टिनेंट बनने वाला था|”
प्रेम सागर जी ने कोर्स पूरा किया, तमाम टेस्ट पास किये, उन्हें 500 रूपये इनाम और 10 दिन की छुट्टी मिली| छुट्टियां बिताकर लौटे तो पता चला कर्नल रिचविच को वापस ब्रिटेन बुला लिया गया था और उनकी जगह एक नये अफ़सर कर्नल हम्पटन आ गए थे| उन दिनों दूसरा विश्वयुद्ध चल रहा था| कर्नल हम्पटन ने आदेश दिया कि प्रेम सागर 11 सिपाहियों को साथ लेकर फ़ौरन इराक़ जाएं, जहां जर्मन जहाज़ बमबारी कर रहे थे|
प्रेम सागर घर लौटे तो लड़ाई में जाने की बात सुनकर उनकी मां और बहनें रोने लगीं| उधर कैप्टेन हबीब ने ये कहकर और भी डरा दिया कि कल ही इराक़ से लाशों से भरी एक ट्रेन आयी है| प्रेम सागर की मां-बहनों की हालत देखकर कैप्टेन हबीब ने सलाह दी कि तू मिलिट्री छोड़ के भाग जा| और प्रेम सागर जी ने उसी रात ट्रेन पकड़ी और बिना किसी योजना के अगली सुबह मुम्बई पहुंच गये| वो कहते हैं, “हैदराबाद में एक लेखक नसीरुद्दीन भी मुझे मिल गया| हम दोनों एक ही सीट पर बैठकर आए| हमारी दोस्ती हो गयी| सुबह हम दादर में उतरे| बिल्कुल नया और अजनबी सा शहर| हमने दादर के प्लेटफार्म पर ही डेरा डाल लिया|

एक रोज़ घूमने निकले तो रणजीत स्टूडियो के बाहर लड़कों की भीड़ नज़र आयी| तभी नसीरुद्दीन की नज़र स्टूडियो के अन्दर चल रही शूटिंग पर पड़ी| पता चला शूटिंग में कुछ लड़के चाहिए थे और बाहर खड़ी वो भीड़ उम्मीदवारों की थी| तभी डायरेक्टर बाहर आया| मुझे और 4 और लड़कों को देखते ही अन्दर बुलाया और मुझे सूट पहनाकर सेट पर भेज दिया| सेट पर क्लब डांस की शूटिंग चल रही थी| डांसर थी कुक्कू| मेरा रोल सी.आई.डी इन्स्पेक्टर का था| चार दिन की शूटिंग थी, जिसके मुझे 400 रूपये मिले| 200 रूपये मैंने मनीआर्डर से हैदराबाद अपने घर भेज दिये|”
रणजीत स्टूडियो में उस दौर के मशहूर निर्माता-निर्देशक के.अमरनाथ का ऑफ़िस हुआ करता था| प्रेम सागर की के.अमरनाथ से जान पहचान हुई जो जल्द ही दोस्ती में बदल गयी| प्रेम सागर जी ने के.अमरनाथ की फ़िल्मों में छोटी छोटी भूमिकाओं से शुरूआत की| बंटवारे की वजह से उन दिनों हिन्दू-मुस्लिम तनाव अपने चरम पर था| डिस्ट्रीब्यूटरों का कहना था कि मुस्लिम नाम नहीं चलेगा| ऐसे में के.अमरनाथ ने प्रेम सागर जी को नाम बदलने की सलाह देते हुए उनके असली नाम सैयद अशफाक़ बुखारी की जगह फ़िल्मी नाम प्रेम सागर दिया| मशहूर खलनायक अजीत को हामिद अली की जगह फ़िल्मी नाम अजीत देने वाले भी के.अमरनाथ ही थे|

प्रेम सागर जी को फ़िल्मों में छोटामोटा काम तो लगातार मिलता रहा, लेकिन उनके चेहरे को पहचान 1950 के दशक के आख़िरी सालों में मिलनी शुरू हुई| आने वाले 4 दशकों में प्रेम सागर ने ‘दो उस्ताद', ‘काला बाज़ार', ‘हम दोनों', ‘संगीत सम्राट तानसेन', ‘दूर की आवाज़', ‘हक़ीक़त', ‘इशारा', ‘आदमी और इंसान', ‘नया ज़माना', ‘यादों की बारात', ‘धुंध', ‘ज़मीर', ‘कर्म', ‘इनकार', ‘डॉन', ‘देस परदेस', ‘द ग्रेट गैम्बलर', ‘काला पत्थर', ’दोस्ताना', ‘राजपूत', ‘कुली', ‘कांच की दीवार', ‘सूर्या', ‘100 डेज़', ‘निश्चय' और 'मझधार' जैसी क़रीब ढाई सौ फ़िल्मों में काम किया और उनका चेहरा ही उनकी पहचान बन गया| साल 1964 की चेतन आनंद की ब्लॉकबस्टर फ़िल्म 'हक़ीक़त' के सुपरहिट गीत 'होके मजबूर मुझे उसने भुलाया होगा' ने प्रेम सागर जी की उस पहचान को और मज़बूत कर दिया था| और फिर 21वीं सदी के आते आते प्रेम सागर जी फ़िल्मी दुनिया को अलविदा कहकर गुमनामी में खो गए|
मेरा सौभाग्य है कि 'सिने एंड टी.वी. आर्टिस्ट एसोसिएशन (सिन्टा)’ के सहयोग से मैं प्रेम सागर तक पहुंचने और उनका इंटरव्यू करने में कामयाब हुआ और इसके लिए मैं सिन्टा का आभारी हूं| सुखद आश्चर्य ये, कि 94 साल की उम्र में भी प्रेम सागर जी की याददाश्त काफ़ी हद तक ताज़ा थी और उन्होंने अपने समकालीन कई भूलेबिसरे कलाकारों के बारे में भी मुझे दुर्लभ जानकारियां दी थीं|
प्रेम सागर जी के परिवार में 3 बेटे और 1 बेटी हैं| उनकी शादी साल 1962 में हुई थी| उनकी पत्नी हैदराबाद की थीं जो 30 जून 2012 को गुज़र गयी थीं|
दु:खद स्थिति ये है कि पिछले कई सालों से घोर आर्थिक अभावों से जूझ रहे प्रेम सागर जी इन दिनों बेहद बीमार हैं और कई दिन अस्पताल में बिताने के बाद अब घर पर भी लगातार ऑक्सीजन पर हैं| उनकी हालत को देखते हुए अब कुछ कहा नहीं जा सकता|

“An Unknown Actor With A Well Known Face” - Prem Sagar

Celluloid history is full of actors who regularly appeared on the silver screen, their faces were well known to the audience, but with passing times they faded away into anonymity leaving behind so many questions unanswered viz ‘Who were they?’, ‘Where did they come from?’ and, ‘Where did they vanish?’ ‘Beete hue din’ has always been in quest of such long forgotten artistes and shall continue to do so as possible.
Prem Sagar was one such unknown artist but with a well known face who, even if known to someone by name, is often mistaken for another Prem Sagar, who is the son of well-known writer, director and producer Ramanand Sagar. The truth is, they are two different persons but with the same name.
Actor Prem Sagar lives in Kalyan, a far eastern suburb of Mumbai. Coming August 2023, he would complete 99 years of age. He is not in good health and is extremely unwell these days. My meeting & interview with him took place on 27th April 2018 at his Kalyan residence.
Prem Sagar’s grandfather Syed Abdul Qadir belonged to Bukhara city of Uzbekistan, which was a part of USSR till 1991. He was invited to India by the then Wazir of the State of Nizam Hyderabad Abdul Lateef to become the Chief Imam of Hyderabad’s famous Bukhari mosque. Prem Sagar’s grandmother was the daughter of Chief Imam of Kabul. Prem Sagar’s real name is Syed Ashfaq Bukhari.
The region of Amravati, Buldhana, Nagpur and Yavatmal in present day Maharashtra was earlier the part of the state of Nizam Hyderabad. Nizam of Hyderabad assigned the Jagirdari (revenue rights) of Pusad, Bori and Katkhera to Prem Sagar’s grandfather. These places are the part of Maharashtra’s Yavatmal district today.
Prem Sagar’s grandfather had built a two storied house at Risod town of Maharashtra’s Washim district. Prem Sagar’s father was a cloth merchant here in Risod. Prem Sagar’s mother hailed from the state of Hyderabad. Prem Sagar was born in Risod on 14th August 1924. He was fourth among nine sons and three daughters. He studied in Urdu medium till seventh standard in Risod.
Prem Sagar says, “Suddenly one day British took away our jagirs including our house & shop, resulting into the closure of my father’s business. My eldest sister’s husband was a Captain in the Army of Nizam Hyderabad. Looking into our plight, my sister called us all to Hyderabad. I was all of 12 years at that time. I was put to work in a cycle repair shop. Then, within next 3 years my father passed away. We were left with no support whatsoever. When I turned 18, my brother-in-law (jija ji) got me recruited in the 19th battalion of the Army. In a rifle shooting competition, I stood first in inter battalion competition of a total of 9 battalions. My British Commanding Officer Col. Ritchwich was so happy, that he rewarded me with 100/- rupees and a paid holiday of eight days. He also directed his junior, one Captain Habeeb to admit me in the Army Training School, Nampalli. After three months training, I was to have directly become a Lieutenant in the Army.
Prem Sagar cleared all the tests and successfully completed the course. At the end of the course, he was given a reward of Rs.500/- with ten days paid holiday. When he reported for duty after holiday, he discovered that Col. Ritchwich had been summoned back to Britain and a new officer Col. Humpton had joined in his place. It was the time when second world war was going on. Prem Sagar was ordered to proceed to Iraq with eleven soldiers where German fighter aircraft were bombarding. Hearing this, Prem Sagar’s mother and sisters started wailing. As if this was not enough, Capt. Habeeb frightened them further by disclosing that the previous day itself, a train full of dead bodies had arrived from Iraq. Looking to the miserable condition of the mother and sisters, Capt. Habeeb advised him to leave army and run away. Prem Sagar without losing any time took the night train and reached Bombay the next morning, without any planning. According to Prem Sagar “A writer by name Naseeruddin travelled with me by the same train and we both shared the same seat. Next morning by the time we got down at Dadar Railway station, we had become good friends, we both were strangers to this new city. We stayed put at the Dadar platform itself. One day, while strolling, we saw a crowd of boys in front of Ranjit Studio. Naseeruddin found out some film shoot was going on inside. Someone told us that some young boys were required and the crowd outside was that of the prospective candidates. Then the director came out, threw a glance at the crowd, picked me and four other boys and took us inside. I was given a suit to wear and sent on the set where the renowned dancer Kukku was shooting. I was in the role of a CID Inspector. I was paid Rs. 400/- for four days of shooting. I immediately money ordered Rs.200/- to my home back in Hyderabad.
Ranjit studio also housed the office of reputed Producer/Director K Amarnath. Prem Sagar got acquainted and soon became good friends with K Amarnath. Prem Sagar started getting small roles in his films. At that time the Hindu-Muslim tension was at its highest, due to the partition. Film distributors were adamant that Muslim names be avoided. Therefore K Amarnath rechristened Prem Sagar with this Hindu name, in place of his real name Syed Ashfaq Bukhari. Popular villain Hamid Ali was also rechristened Ajeet by the same K Amarnath.
Prem Sagar continued to get small roles in the films. His face came to be recognized towards the end of 1950s. For the coming four decades, Prem Sagar worked in the films viz. Do Ustad, Kala Bazar, Hum Dono, Sangeet Samrat Tansen, Door ki Awaj, Haqeeqat, Ishara, Aadmi aur Insaan, Naya Zamana, Yaadon ki barat, Dhundh, Zameer, Karm, Inqaar, Don, Des-Pardes, The Great Gambler, Kala Patthar, Dostana, Rajput, Coolie, Kaanch ki deewar, Surya, 100 Days, Nishchay, and Majhdhar etc. some 250 films in all, and his face became his biggest identity. In 1964 Chetan Anand’s blockbuster film Haqeeqat’s popular song ‘Hoke Majboor mujhe usne bhulaya hoga’ also strengthened Prem Sagar’s identity. As the 21st centenary was approaching, Prem Sagar was bidding farewell to film industry and eventually he faded away into oblivion.
Prem Sagar was also associated with the theatre. In the 1960s decade his company ‘Bombay Theatre’s play ‘Devar-Bhabhi’ and ‘Kiraaye ka shauhar’ were a runway success. These plays were staged in different cities of India.
I feel lucky to have met Prem Sagar and interview him. It became possible due to the unstinted support and cooperation from CINTAA (Cine and TV Artist Association), my gratitude to CINTAA. It was a pleasant surprise to find Prem Sagar with a sharp memory even at the ripe age of 94 years. He provided me the rare details of so many of his contemporary and long forgotten actors.
Prem Sagar got married in 1962. His wife was from Hyderabad. She passed away on June 30, 2012. He has three sons and a daughter.
Sadly, Prem Sagar has been facing both financial and medical complications for the last several years. He had been admitted to hospital a month ago, is back home now, but is constantly on oxygen. Looking at his condition, nothing can be said now.
