‘ज़िंदगी किस मोड़ पे लाई मुझे’ – स्नेहल भाटकर

हिंदी सिनेमा के इतिहास में ग़ुलाम मुहम्मद, हंसराज बहल, सरदार मलिक, एस.मोहिंदर, अजीत मर्चेंट, रामलाल, जयदेव, इक़बाल क़ुरैशी, दान सिंह और जी.एस.कोहली जैसे कई गुणी संगीतकार हुए जिन्होंने मौक़ा मिलते ही बेहद सुरीली धुनें बनाकर सुनने वालों का दिल तो ज़रूर जीता, लेकिन अफ़सोस कि उनके करियर का ग्राफ़ उन ऊंचाईयों पर नहीं पहुंच पाया जिसके वो हक़दार थे। शायद इसकी वजह यही थी कि उन्हें ख़ुद को बेचना नहीं आता था। इन्हीं नामों में शामिल थे वो संगीतकार जो शुरूआती फ़िल्में ‘वासुदेव’, बी.वासुदेव’, ‘स्नेहल’ और ‘वी.जी.भाटकर’ के नाम से करने के बाद अंतत: ‘स्नेहल भाटकर’ के नाम से पहचाने गए।

स्नेहल भाटकर ने अपने करियर की शुरूआत साल 1946 में बनी फ़िल्म ‘रूक्मिणी स्वयंवर’ से की थी जिसमें उन्होंने सुधीर फड़के के साथ ‘वासुदेव-सुधीर’ के नाम से जोड़ी बनाकर संगीत दिया था। ‘प्रदीप पिक्चर्स’ के बैनर में हिंदी और मराठी में बनी इस पौराणिक द्विभाषी फ़िल्म के निर्देशक ‘बाबूराव पेंटर’ थे। लेकिन न तो ये फ़िल्म कोई करिश्मा कर पाई और न ही इसके संगीत को ख़ास कामयाबी मिली। ‘वासुदेव-सुधीर’ की जोड़ी भी इस इकलौती फ़िल्म में संगीत देने के बाद टूट गयी।

स्नेहल भाटकर का जन्म 17 जुलाई 1919 को मुंबई में हुआ था। कुछ साल पहले दक्षिण मुंबई के अपने निवास पर हुई मुलाक़ात के दौरान स्नेहल भाटकर ने बताया था, ‘मैं डेढ़ साल का था जब मेरे पिता गुज़रे थे। मां टीचर थीं जिन्हें गाने का शौक़ था। उन्हें गाता देखकर ही मेरा झुकाव संगीत की तरफ़ हुआ था। मैं उनके सुर में सुर मिलाने की कोशिश करता था। मां ही मेरी पहली गुरू थीं जिनसे मुझे संगीत की शुरूआती शिक्षा मिली थी। मैट्रिक करने के बाद मैंने दादर के मशहूर ‘श्रीकृष्ण संगीत विद्यालय’ में दाख़िला लेकर औपचारिक तौर पर संगीत सीखना शुरू किया। साथ ही मैं सत्यनारायण पूजा के सार्वजनिक कार्यक्रमों में भी गाने लगा था जिससे मेरी पहचान बनी और फिर मुझे एच.एम.वी. में म्यूज़ीशियन की नौकरी मिल गयी। ये 1940 के दशक की शुरूआत की बात है। कंपनी ने उस दौरान मेरे गाए कई ग़ैर-फ़िल्मी मराठी रेकॉर्ड भी बनाए थे।‘     

एच.एम.वी. में ही स्नेहल भाटकर की मुलाक़ात लेखक-निर्देशक केदार शर्मा से हुई थी जो उन्हीं दिनों कोलकाता के ‘न्यू थिएटर्स’ से मुंबई आकर सरदार चंदूलाल शाह और गौहरजान मामाजीवाला के ‘रणजीत स्टूडियो’ में नौकरी पर लगे थे। केदार शर्मा ने स्नेहल भाटकर का करियर बनाने में अहम भूमिका निभाई। सबसे पहले केदार शर्मा ने स्नेहल भाटकर को अपनी फ़िल्म ‘कलियां’ (1944) में कुछ गीत गाने का मौक़ा दिया। उसी साल में बनी एक अन्य फ़िल्म ‘लेडी डॉक्टर’ में भी स्नेहल भाटकर ने कुछ गीत गाए थे।

फ़िल्म ‘रूक्मिणी स्वयंवर’ के बाद ‘वासुदेव-सुधीर’ की जोड़ी टूटी तो दोनों ही संगीतकारों ने क्रमश: ‘बी.वासुदेव’ और ‘सुधीर फड़के’ के नाम से स्वतंत्र रूप से संगीत देना शुरू कर दिया था। बतौर स्वतंत्र संगीतकार स्नेहल भाटकर की पहली फ़िल्म थी साल 1947 में बनी केदार शर्मा की ‘नीलकमल’ जिसमें उन्होंने ‘बी.वासुदेव’ के नाम से संगीत दिया था। ‘नीलकमल’ बतौर हीरो राजकपूर की और बतौर हिरोईन मधुबाला की भी पहली फ़िल्म थी। यों तो इस फ़िल्म में मुकेश ने भी गाने गाए थे लेकिन राजकपूर के लिए प्लेबैक स्नेहल भाटकर ने किया था। स्नेहल भाटकर का कहना था, ‘यों तो मेरा असली नाम ‘वासुदेव गंगाराम भाटकर’ है लेकिन चूंकि मैं एच.एम.वी. के साथ बाहर काम न करने की शर्त से बंधा हुआ था इसलिए फिल्मों में संगीत देने के लिए मुझे नाम बदलना पड़ा था। ‘रूक्मिणी स्वयंवर’ (1946) में मैं ‘वासुदेव’ था तो ‘नीलकमल’ (1947) में बी.वासुदेव। ‘सुहागरात’ (1948) और ‘ठेस’ (1949) में मैंने ‘स्नेहल’ के नाम से संगीत दिया तो ‘संत तुकाराम’ (1948), ‘सती अहिल्या’ (1949) और ‘पगले’ (1950) में ‘वी.जी.भाटकर’ के नाम से।...और ये सब मुझे अपनी नौकरी बचाने के लिए करना पड़ा। ‘संत तुकाराम’ में तो मैंने 8 में से 6 गीत भी गाए थे। लेकिन साल 1949 में नौकरी से इस्तीफ़ा देकर मैं ‘स्नेहल भाटकर’ के नाम से पूरी तरह से फ़िल्म-संगीत के क्षेत्र में कूद पड़ा। साल 1949 में मैंने ‘शालीमार पिक्चर्स’ की फ़िल्म ‘रंगीला राजस्थान’ में ‘भरत व्यास’ के लिखे और संगीतबद्ध किए कुछ गीत गाए। ‘स्नेहल’ नाम मैंने अपनी बेटी ‘स्नेहलता’ के नाम पर रखा था जिसका जन्म उन्हीं दिनों हुआ था।‘

क़रीब पांच दशकों के अपने करियर के दौरान स्नेहल भाटकर ने कुल 27 हिंदी और क़रीब 12 मराठी फ़िल्मों में संगीत दिया। अभिनेत्री शोभना समर्थ ने अपनी बेटी नूतन को लांच करने के लिए फ़िल्म ‘हमारी बेटी’ (1950) बनाई तो उसके संगीत की ज़िम्मेदारी स्नेहल भाटकर ने संभाली और इसी फ़िल्म से वो पहली बार ‘स्नेहल भाटकर’ के नाम से जाने गए।

1950 के दशक में स्नेहल भाटकर ने ‘भोला शंकर’, ‘नंदकिशोर’ (दोनों 1951), ‘गुनाह’ (1953), ‘आज की बात’, ‘बिंदिया’, ‘डाकू’ (सभी 1955), ‘दीवाली की रात’, ‘जलदीप’ (दोनों 1956), ‘हरिया’, ‘स्काऊट कैम्प’ (1958), ‘छबीली’ और ‘गुरूभक्ति’ (दोनों 1960) में संगीत दिया। फ़िल्म ‘भोला शंकर’ में उन्होंने 3 गीत भी गाए थे। फ़िल्म ‘नंदकिशोर’ हिंदी के साथ ही मराठी भाषा में भी बनी थी। ‘आज की बात’ का निर्माण और निर्देशन अभिनेत्री लीला चिटणिस ने अपने बेटे अजीत चिटणिस को लांच करने के लिए किया था। वी.बलसारा के संगीत निर्देशन में फ़िल्म ‘मदमस्त’ (1954) से करियर शुरू करने वाले महेन्द्र कपूर ने फ़िल्म ‘दीवाली की रात’ में अपना पहला सोलो गीत ‘तेरे दर की भिखमंगी है दाता दुनिया सारी’ गाया था। स्नेहल भाटकर ने साल 1956 में बनी फ़िल्म ‘हरिहर भक्ति’ में भी ‘के.दत्ता’ के संगीत में एक सोलोगीत गाया था।

फिल्म ‘छबीली’ का निर्माण और निर्देशन शोभना समर्थ ने किया था और इसमें नूतन का गाया सोलो गीत ‘ऐ मेरे हमसफ़र’ और हेमंत कुमार के साथ गाया उनका युगलगीत ‘लहरों पे लहर, उल्फ़त है जवां’ उस जमाने में बेहद मशहूर हुए थे। 1950 के दशक में ही स्नेहल भाटकर की एक फ़िल्म ‘गंगा की लहरें’ भी बनी थी। ‘जलदीप’, ‘हरिया’, ‘स्काऊट कैम्प’ और ‘गंगा की लहरें’ का निर्माण ‘चिल्ड्रेन फ़िल्म सोसायटी’ ने किया था। उस दौर में स्नेहल भाटकर मराठी फ़िल्मों में बेहद व्यस्त हो चले थे लेकिन मौक़ा मिलते ही वो हिंदी फ़िल्मों में भी संगीत देते रहते थे। 1960 के दशक में उनकी 3 हिन्दी फ़िल्में, ‘हमारी याद आएगी’ (1961), ‘दीपक’ (1963) और ‘फ़रियाद’ (1964) रिलीज़ हुईं।

यों तो अपनी तमाम फ़िल्मों के कर्णप्रिय संगीत के ज़रिए स्नेहल भाटकर लगातार सफलता की सीढ़ियां चढ़ते गए लेकिन ‘हमारी याद आएगी’ के शीर्षक गीत ‘कभी तनहाईयों में यूं’ ने स्नेहल भाटकर के साथ ही गायिका मुबारक बेगम को भी मशहूरी की बुलंदियों पर ला खड़ा किया था। ‘कभी तनहाईयों में यूं’ का शुमार हिंदी फ़िल्मों के सफलतम गीतों में किया जाता है। इसी फ़िल्म के ‘फ़रिश्तों की नगरी में मैं आ गया हूं’ (मुकेश, मुबारक बेगम) और ‘सोचता हूं ये क्या किया मैंने’ (मुकेश, लता) जैसे गीत भी उस दौर में ख़ासे मशहूर हुए थे। फ़िल्म ‘दीपक’ का निर्माण ‘चिल्ड्रेन फ़िल्म सोसायटी’ ने किया था। फ़िल्म ‘फ़रियाद’ के गीत ‘हाले दिल उनको सुनाना था’ (सुमन कल्याणपुर) और ‘वो देखो देखो देख रहा है पपीहा’ (सुमन कल्याणपुर, महेन्द्र कपूर) भी अपने वक़्त में काफ़ी पसंद किए गए थे।

केदार शर्मा की ज़्यादातर फ़िल्मों का संगीत स्नेहल भाटकर ने तैयार किया था। केदार शर्मा की ही रोशन द्वारा संगीतबद्ध फ़िल्म ‘बावरे नैन’ में स्नेहल भाटकर परदे पर भी नज़र आए थे। इस फ़िल्म का रफ़ी और आशा का गाया मशहूर गीत ‘मोहब्बत के मारों का हाल ये दुनिया में होता है’ स्नेहल भाटकर पर फ़िल्माया गया था। सी.रामचन्द्र द्वारा संगीतबद्ध फ़िल्म ‘संगीता’ (1950) में सी.रामचन्द्र (चितलकर) के साथ स्नेहल भाटकर की गायी क़व्वाली ‘तेरी हाय के साथ निकलेगी मेरी हाय’ भी उस दौर में काफ़ी मशहूर हुई थी।    

साल 1980 में स्नेहल भाटकर की ‘पहला कदम’, 1983 में ‘ख़ुदा हाफ़िज़’, 1989 में ‘प्यासे नैन’ और 1994 में ‘सहमे हुए सितारे’ रिलीज़ हुईं लेकिन वक़्त के साथ-साथ दर्शकों की पसंद भी बदल चुकी थी। यही वजह है कि इनमें से कोई भी फ़िल्म अपनी छाप नहीं छोड़ पाई। ‘सहमे हुए सितारे’ के हीरो स्नेहल भाटकर के बेटे और मराठी फ़िल्मों के जाने-माने अभिनेता रमेश भाटकर थे। ये फ़िल्म स्नेहल भाटकर के करियर की आख़िरी फ़िल्म साबित हुई।

स्नेहल भाटकर का देहांत 88 साल की उम्र में 29 मई 2007 को मुंबई में हुआ। भक्ति-संगीत से उनका जुड़ाव बचपन से था। भले ही वो आज हमारे बीच नहीं हैं लेकिन एक उच्चकोटि के ‘अभंग’ (मराठी भक्ति गीत) गायक के तौर पर उनका नाम आज भी महाराष्ट्र के हर घर में अत्यंत सम्मान के साथ लिया जाता है।

The history of Hindi Cinema boasts of many talented composers like Ghulam Mohammad, Hansraj Behl, Sardar Malik, S.Mohinder, Ajit Merchant, Ramlal, Jaidev, Iqbal Qureshi, Daan Singh and G.S.Kohli who created very melodious songs at every opportunity, yet, their career trajectories could not take them to the heights of success they deserved just because they didn’t know how to sell themselves.  Among these was a very talented composer who initially worked under many aliases like ‘Vasudev’, B.Vasudev’, ‘Snehal’ and ‘V.G.Bhatkar’ and eventually came to be recognition as ‘Snehal Bhatkar’. 

Snehal Bhatkar started his career with the film ‘Rukmini Swayamwar’, made in 1946, where he was one part of the music director duo named ‘Vasudev-Sudhir’, Sudhir Phadke being the other half. Made in Hindi and Marathi under the banner of ‘Pradeep Pictures’, this bilingual mythological film was directed by ‘Baburao Painter’. But neither the film nor its music saw much success. Ultimately this proved to be the first and last film of the music director duo named ‘Vasudev-Sudhir’ as they parted ways after the release of this film.

Snehal Bhatkar was born on 17th July, 1919 in Mumbai. During a meeting at his residence in South Mumbai a few years back, Snehal Bhatkar said, ‘I was just one and a half years old when my father passed away. My mother was a teacher and was a good singer as well.  My inclination towards music grew as I saw her singing. I tried to sing with her. She was my first ‘Guru’ who taught me the basics of music. After completing matriculation I formally started taking music lessons at Dadar’s renowned music school ‘Shri Krishna Sangeet Vidyalaya’. Simultaneously I started singing in public programs at ‘Satyanarayan Pooja’ which gave me recognition and ultimately I got a job as a musician with H.M.V. company. This happened in the initial years of 1940’s decade. During that period the company released many of my non-film Marathi records.’   

At H.M.V., Snehal Bhatkar came in contact with writer-director Kedar Sharma who had recently shifted to Mumbai from Kolkata’s ‘New Theatres’ and was working with Sardar Chandulal Shah and Goharjaan Mamajiwala’s ‘Ranjit Studio’. Kedar Sharma played a very important role in shaping Snehal Bhatkar’s career. Kedar Sharma at first gave a few songs to Snehal Bhatkar to sing in his film ‘Kaliyaan’ (1944).  The same year Snehal Bhatkar also sang few songs in another film ‘Lady Doctor’.

As they parted ways after the release of the movie ‘Rukmini Swayamwar’, the music director duo ‘Vasudev’ & ‘Sudhir’ started working independently under the names ‘B.Vasudev’ and ‘Sudhir Phadke’. Snehal Bhatkar’s first film as an independent composer was 1947’s release ‘Neel Kamal’ which was produced and directed by Kedar Sharma. Snehal Bhatkar’s name in the credits was ‘B.Vasudev’ in this film. ‘Neel Kamal’ was the first film for Rajkapoor and Madhubala as main leads. Mukesh also sang a few songs in this film but the songs for ‘the hero’, namely Raj Kapoor, were sung by Snehal Bhatkar.

Snehal Bhatkar said, ‘my actual name is ‘Vasudev Gangaram Bhatkar’ but I was compelled to work with a pseudo name because as per my contract with H.M.V., I was not allowed to work outside the company. I worked in ‘Rukmini Swayamwar’ (1946) with the name ‘Vasudev’ and in ‘Neel Kamal’ (1947) as B.Vasudev. In ‘Suhag Raat’ (1948) and ‘Thes’ (1949) I worked as ‘Snehal’ then in ‘Sant Tukaram’ (1948), ‘Sati Ahilya’ (1949) and ‘Pagle’ (1950) as ‘V.G.Bhatkar’. ...and I had to do so to save my job with H.M.V. I also sang 6 of the total 8 songs in ‘Sant Tukaram’. And then in the year 1949 I resigned from my job and jumped into the field of music direction with the adopted name of ‘Snehal Bhatkar’.  In the year 1949 I sang few songs in ‘Shalimar Pictures’ film ‘Rangeela Rajasthan’ which were penned and composed by ‘Bharat Vyas’. I borrowed the name ‘Snehal’ from my newly born daughter ‘Snehalata’.

During a career spanning 5 decades, Snehal Bhatkar composed music for a total of 27 Hindi and 12 Marathi films. When actress Shobhna Samarth made a film ‘Hamari Beti’ (1950) to launch her daughter Nutan as an actress, the responsibility to compose the music of this film was given to Snehal Bhatkar and this was the film for which he adopted the name ‘Snehal Bhatkar’ for the first time. 

During 1950’s Snehal Bhatkar composed music for the films ‘Bhola Shankar’, ‘Nand Kishore’ (both 1951), ‘Gunaah’ (1953), ‘Aaj Ki Baat’, ‘Bindiya’, ‘Daku’ (all 1955), ‘Diwali Ki Raat’, ‘Jaldeep’ (both 1956), ‘Hariya’, ‘Scout Camp’ (both 1958), ‘Chhabili’ and ‘Guru Bhakti’ (both 1960). He also sang 3 songs in the film ‘Bhola Shankar’. ‘Nand Kishore’ was a bilingual movie made in Hindi and Marathi. ‘Aaj Ki Baat’ was produced and directed by actress Leela Chitnis to  launch her son Ajit Chitnis as hero. Mahendra Kapoor, whose debut film as singer was ‘Madmast’ (1954) under the music direction of V.Balsara sang his first solo song ‘tere dar ki bhikhmangi hai data duniya saari’ in the film ‘Diwali Ki Raat’. Snehal Bhatkar also sang a solo song composed by ‘K.Dutta’ in a 1956 release ‘Harihar Bhakti’. Film ‘Chhabili’ was again produced and directed by Shobhna Samarth and the solo song ‘aye mere humsafar’ sung by Nutan and the duet ‘lehron pe leher, ulfat hai jawaan’ sung by Nutan and Hemant Kumar, of this film were great hits at that time. In the 1950’s another film of Snehal Bhatkar’s called ‘Ganga Ki Lehrein’ was made. ‘Jaldeep’, ‘Hariya’, ‘Scout Camp’ and ‘Ganga Ki Lehrein’ were made by ‘Children Film Society’. Though busy with his Marathi films as well during that time, Snehal Bhatkar also composed music for Hindi movies as and when he got a chance.  In the 1960’s decade 3 of his Hindi movies, ‘Hamari Yaad Ayegi’ (1961), ‘Deepak’ (1963) and ‘Fariyaad’ (1964) were released. 

Through his melodious compositions Snehal Bhatkar continuously proceeded towards success but it was ‘Hamari Yaad Ayegi’s title song ‘kabhi tanhaiyon me yoon’ which brought not only Snehal Bhatkar but also the singer Mubarak Begum to the heights of popularity. ‘Kabhi tanhaiyon me yoon’ is considered as one of the most popular songs in the history of Hindi film music. Some of the other songs like ‘farishton ki nagri me mai aa gaya hoon’ (Mukesh, Mubarak Begum) and ‘sochta hoon ye kya kiya maine’ (Mukesh, Lata) of this film were also big hits at that time. Film ‘Deepak’ was made by ‘Children Film Society’. Songs like ‘haale dil unko sunaana tha’ (Suman Kalyanpur) and ‘wo dekho dekho dekh raha hai papiha’ (Suman Kalyanpur, Mahendra Kapoor) from the film ‘Fariyaad’ were also big hits.

Most of Kedar Sharma’s films were composed by Snehal Bhatkar who also acted in Kedar Sharma’s film ‘Bawre Nain’. The hit song ‘mohabbat ke maaron ka haal ye duniya me hota hai’ of this movie which was sung by Rafi and Asha under the baton of composer Roshan was picturised on Snehal Bhatkar. A 1950 release, film ‘Sangeeta’s qawwali ‘teri haye ke saath niklegi meri haaye’ which was composed by C.Ramchandra and sung by C.Ramchandra (Chitalkar) and Snehal Bhatkar was again a very big hit of its times.     

The time had changed, and so changed the taste of the audience. Snehal Bhatkar’s films like ‘Pehla Kadam’ - 1980, ‘Khuda Hafiz’ - 1983, ‘Pyase Nain’ - 1989 and ‘Sehme Hue Sitare’ - 1994 were released but none of these films nor the music could impress the audience. ‘Sehme Hue Sitare’s hero was Snehal Bhatkar’s son and a well-known actor of Marathi cinema Ramesh Bhatkar. This also proved to be Snehal Bhatkar’s last film.

Snehal Bhatkar passed away at the age of 88 years on 29th May 2007 in Mumbai. He was attached to devotional music since his childhood. Though he is not alive yet he is very respectfully and fondly remembered as a superordinate ‘Abhang’ (Marathi devotional songs) singer in each and every household of Maharashtra even today.
