“Mother & Sister in Law on big screen, Shabari on TV” - Sarita Devi
.....Shishir Krishna Sharma
Hindi cinema has had numerous such artists who were regularly seen on the screen and their faces are embedded deep into viewers’ memory. Who they were, where did they come from, what was their name, where did they vanish and where would they be today?, lost in oblivion, they left so many questions behind.
Sarita Devi was one such artist who remained active for 40 years, succeeded in becoming a known face but nothing more. 40 years later, while her career graph was on the decline, a miracle happened. Years of grueling struggle on big screen was overshadowed by a single episode of the blockbuster TV serial Ramayan, in which her role as Shabari invokes deep respect in the hearts of common people.
I could obtain the whole lot of information about Sarita Devi from her daughter Ms. Vijayshri, Jaipur based senior journalist Shri M.D. Soni and Ms. Maitrimanthan’s blog ‘Maitrimanthan’. Shri M.D. Soni got an opportunity of interviewing Sarita Devi ji in a function held at Jodhpur in 1993.
Sarita Devi was born on 23rd November 1923 in Jodhpur in a Peepa Kshatriya clan. Her father Poonam Chand Chauhan owned a tailoring shop. Sarita Devi had a sister elder to her. Sarita Devi studied upto Matric and began teaching in the same school.
Sarita Devi was fond of films and acting right from her childhood. M.D. Soni while interviewing Sarita Devi for Rajasthan Patrika disclosed that her father was extremely encouraging. With encouragement from her father, she arrived in Mumbai at the age of 20-22 years in mid-1940. (though Vijayshri is emphatic that her maternal grandfather was against this, therefore, Sarita Devi landed in Mumbai without the knowledge of her father, though she did not hide anything from her mother).
According to Vijayshri her mother took refuge with a Gujarati family, known to her. In connection with her work she came in contact with Lalji Gohil, a Drama Producer. Lalji Gohil belonged to Bagavas area of Jodhpur princely state. Sarita Devi began acting on stage in Gujarati, Marathi and Rajasthani language plays. Lalji Gohil’s play ‘Ram aur Rahim’ was a big hit. It brought wide recognition for Sarita Devi. In 1951, Sarita Devi married Lalji Gohil.
‘Tohfa’ of 1947 was Sarita Devi’s debut film in which she played the role of a mother at the age of 24. Same year she again played the role of mother in ‘Rivaaj’. She played the role of Nirupa Roy’s aunt (bua) in 1948’s ‘Hip Hip Hurray’ alias ‘Chaube ji’. She played the similar character roles in ‘Chunariya’ (1948) and ‘Chakori’ (1949).
Sarita Devi, in her long career of 45 years played character roles in more than 200 Hindi films e.g. ‘Do Beegha Zameen’, ‘Taxi Driver’, ‘Devdas’, ‘Sone ki Chidiya’, ‘Love Marriage’, ‘Aayi Milan ki Bela’, ‘Aaye Din Bahar Ke’, ‘Aap Aaye Bahar Aayi’, ‘Piya Ka Ghar’, ‘Pakeezah’, ‘Ganga Ki Saugandh’, ‘Aanchal’, ‘Pyar Jhukta Nahi’. But she earned an indelible mark by playing the single episode role of aged Bhil tribal lady Mata Shabari in Doordarshan’s blockbuster serial ‘Ramayan’ telecast in 1986-87. Again in 1993 she made a come back in the TV serial ‘Shri Krishna’. ‘Aadmi Khilona Hai’ (1993) was the last film of her career.
Besides Hindi, Sarita Devi did films in Rajasthani, Gujarati, Bhojpuri, Marathi, Bangla and Haryanvi languages as well. Her role as a wicked aunt of Baba Ramdev in the Rajasthani film ‘Baba Ramdev’ (1963) was well appreciated by the viewers. Sarita Devi was well versed in linguistic skill. She dubbed for a couple of Russian language films in Hindi and was honored for the same.
In the year 1993 Jodhpur’s Kala Triveni Sansthan celebrated its Golden Jubilee year. Sarita Devi was honored in this function for her contribution to cinema. It was in this function that M.D.Soni ji had got an opportunity to interview her.
Lalji Gohil, after his wedding to Sarita Devi, closed down his Drama company and had opened a Tailoring shop in Mumbai’s suburb Khar. The couple had two sons and one daughter. For Lalji Gohil, it was his second marriage. He had two sons from his first marriage as well. For Sarita Devi also it was her second marriage of sort. Her first wedding took place when she was barely 12 years of age. Unfortunately, her husband had died within two months of wedding.
Sarita Devi’s husband Lalji Gohil passed away on 21 June 1990. Sarita Devi’s elder son is also no more. Daughter Vijayshri worked for a Private company and has since retired. Her primary concern was to look after her parents therefore, she chose to remain a spinster all her life. Vijay shri lives with her younger brother’s family in Thakur Complex, Kandivali (East).
Sarita Devi suffered from Parkinson’s disease in her last 5-6 years, which worsened with age. Sarita Devi succumbed to her disease on 28th June 2001 at the age of 78 years.
