‘मेरी लॉटरी लग जाने वाली है’ : राजिंदरनाथ

1960 के दशक में महमूद के उदय के साथ ही जॉनीवॉकर समेत उस दौर के सभी जानेमाने हास्य-अभिनेताओं की चमक फीकी पड़ने लगी थी। लेकिन राजिंदरनाथ इसका अपवाद थे, जिनका करियर लगभग महमूद के साथ ही शुरू हुआ और बुलंदियों पर भी पहुंचा था। राजिंदरनाथ के करियर पर महमूद के स्टारडम का कोई असर नहीं पड़ा क्योंकि वो अपनी एक बिल्कुल अलग इमेज बनाने में कामयाब रहे थे।

हिंदी साप्ताहिक ‘सहारा समय’ के अपने कॉलम ‘क्या भूलूं क्या याद करूं’ के लिए राजिंदरनाथ जी को तलाशने में मुझे काफ़ी समय लगा। वो कई सालों से ‘सिने एंड टी.वी. आर्टिस्ट एसोसिएशन’ (सिंटा) के सम्पर्क में नहीं थे। ‘सिंटा’ के रेकॉर्ड में उनका कोलाबा का पता दर्ज था लेकिन वो अब उस पते पर नहीं रहते थे। काफ़ी कोशिशों के बाद पता चला कि राजिंदरनाथ जी के बारे में उनके क़रीबी दोस्त अभिनेता बीरबल बता सकते हैं। और इस तरह बीरबल जी के ज़रिए मैं राजिंदरनाथ जी तक पहुंचने में कामयाब हुआ, जो अब ख़ार (पश्चिम) के दसवें रास्ते की ऑर्किड व्हाईट बिल्डिंग में रहते थे।       

राजिंदरनाथ मल्होत्रा का परिवार मूलत: पेशावर का रहने वाला था। उनके पिता अंग्रेज़ों के ज़माने में पुलिस विभाग में उच्चाधिकारी थे और नौकरी के सिलसिले में उनका ज़्यादातर समय भारत की विभिन्न रियासतों में ग़ुज़रता था। राजिंदरनाथ मल्होत्रा का जन्म 8 जून 1931 को मध्यप्रांत (अब मध्यप्रदेश) के टीकमगढ़  क़स्बे में हुआ था। उन्होंने अपनी स्कूली पढ़ाई रीवा में की थी। कांग्रेसी नेता अर्जुन सिंह राजिंदरनाथ के सहपाठी और क़रीबी दोस्त थे। पृथ्वीराज कपूर से मल्होत्रा परिवार की क़रीबी रिश्तेदारी थी जो राजिंदर नाथ की बड़ी बहन कृष्णा और राज कपूर की शादी से और भी मज़बूत हो गयी थी। राजिंदरनाथ की छोटी बहन उमा अभिनेता प्रेम चोपड़ा की पत्नी हैं।

राजिंदरनाथ ने बताया था, “मेरे बड़े भाई प्रेमनाथ जी भी मुंबई में ही रहते थे और फ़िल्मों में काम करते थे। मेरी स्कूली पढ़ाई ख़त्म हुई तो प्रेमनाथ जी ने मुझे भी मुंबई बुला लिया। मैं साल 1947 में मुंबई आया और पृथ्वीराज कपूर की नाटक कम्पनी ‘पृथ्वी थिएटर’ में शामिल हो गया। मैंने ‘पृथ्वी थिएटर’ के नाटकों ‘दीवार’, ‘पठान’, ‘शकुंतला’ और ‘आहुति’ में अभिनय किया। ‘पृथ्वी थिएटर’ से मेरा जुड़ाव क़रीब 10 सालों तक रहा। शम्मी कपूर, शशि कपूर, सज्जन, शंकर और जयकिशन ‘पृथ्वी थिएटर’ में मेरे क़रीबी दोस्त थे”।

राजिंदरनाथ के मुताबिक़ वो नाटकों के साथ साथ फ़िल्मों में भी छोटे-मोटे रोल कर लेते थे। लेकिन वो रोल इतने छोटे होते थे कि राजिंदरनाथ परदे पर कब आए और कब गए, पता ही नहीं चलता था। वैसे भी बड़े भाई की सरपरस्ती में दिन बेफ़िक्री से गुज़र रहे थे। करियर को लेकर वो ज़रा भी गम्भीर नहीं थे। लेकिन उनकी इस लापरवाही से प्रेमनाथ उनसे नाराज़ रहने लगे थे। और एक रोज़ प्रेमनाथ ने ग़ुस्से में आकर राजिंदरनाथ को घर से निकाल दिया।

राजिंदरनाथ के मुताबिक़, “ये मेरे लिए बहुत बड़ा झटका था। हालांकि भाईसाहब ने रहने के लिए अपना ही एक और मक़ान मुझे दे दिया था लेकिन बाक़ी की बुनियादी ज़रूरतें पूरी करना भी एक बड़ी समस्या थी। आज के जानेमाने निर्माता यश जौहर भी मेरे साथ उसी मक़ान में रहकर संघर्ष कर रहे थे। हम दोनों ही बड़ा आदमी बनने के सपने देखते थे। मेरे पास एक पुराना स्कूटर था जिसमें पेट्रोल भराने के लिए भी अक्सर हमारे पास पैसे नहीं होते थे। खाने का इंतज़ाम भी जानपहचान वालों के घरों में हो जाता था। लेकिन ऐसा कितने दिन चलता। मजबूरन मुझे करियर के प्रति गंभीर होना ही पड़ा। आज महसूस करता हूं कि प्रेमनाथ जी ने जो भी किया, मेरे भले के लिए ही किया”।

राजिंदरनाथ को पहली बार जिस फ़िल्म में ठीकठाक सा रोल मिला था वो थी साल 1953 में बनी ‘शग़ूफ़ा’। इस फिल्म का निर्माण प्रेमनाथ ने अपने बैनर ‘पी.एन.फ़िल्म्स’ में किया था। साल 1954 में प्रेमनाथ ने फ़िल्म ‘गोलकुण्डा का क़ैदी’ का निर्माण किया जिसमें राजिंदरनाथ सहनायक थे। लेकिन ये दोनों ही फ़िल्में असफल रहीं। साल 1956 में बनी फ़िल्म ‘हम सब चोर हैं’ की छोटी सी हास्य भूमिका ने राजिंदरनाथ को पहचान दी। साल 1959 में बनी फ़िल्म ‘शरारत’ ने उस पहचान को मज़बूत किया और उसी साल बनी ‘दिल देके देखो’ की कामयाबी ने उन्हें स्टार हास्य कलाकार बना दिया। फ़िल्म ‘दिल देके देखो’ के बाद उन्हें पीछे मुड़कर नहीं देखना पड़ा। साल 1961 में बनी फ़िल्म ‘जब प्यार किसी से होता है’ की उनकी हास्यभूमिका ने उन्हें घर-घर में ‘पोपटलाल’ के रूप में मशहूर कर दिया था।  

अगले क़रीब 12 सालों तक राजिंदरनाथ का करियर बुलंदियों पर रहा। उस दौरान उन्होंने तमाम बड़े निर्माता-निर्देशकों के साथ काम किया और वो ‘उसने कहा था’, ‘प्रेमपत्र’, ‘मुझे जीने दो’, ‘तेरे घर के सामने’ ‘ये रास्ते हैं प्यार के’, ‘मेरे सनम’, ‘आए दिन बहार के’, ‘हरे कांच की चूड़ियां’, ‘एन ईवनिंग इन पेरिस’, ‘आया सावन झूम के’, ‘प्रिंस’, ‘आन मिलो सजना’, ‘आप आए बहार आयी’, ‘धड़कन’, ‘मेला’, ‘एक बार मुस्कुरा दो’ जैसी कई हिट फ़िल्मों में नज़र आए। लेकिन साल 1969 में एक कार दुर्घटना में गंभीर रूप से ज़ख़्मी हो जाने की वजह से राजिंदरनाथ को कई महिने अस्पताल में गुज़ारने पड़े जिसका उनके करियर पर बुरा असर पड़ा। ऐसे में राजिंदरनाथ ने निर्माता बनने का फ़ैसला किया।

राजिंदरनाथ के मुताबिक़, “साल 1974 में मैंने रणधीर कपूर और नीतू सिंह को फ़िल्म ‘द गेट क्रैशर’ की शूटिंग शुरू की। न तो मुझे फ़िल्म निर्माण का तजुर्बा था और न ही इतने बरस फ़िल्मी दुनिया में गुज़ारने के बावजूद मैं यहां के तौर तरीक़े ही सीख पाया था। शूटिंग के दौरान जिसने जितना मांगा, भरोसा करके खुले हाथ उतना पैसा लुटाता चला गया। नतीजतन दस दिनों की शूटिंग के बाद फ़िल्म बंद हो गयी। मैं भारी कर्ज़ के नीचे दब चुका था। 

एक बार फिर से संघर्ष शुरू हुआ। छोटे-बड़े जैसे भी रोल मिले किए ताकि कर्ज़ा चुका सकूं। दिल्ली और यू.पी. के डिस्ट्रीब्यूटरों ने मुझे ख़ून के आंसू रोने पर मजबूर कर दिया। मेरे हालात का पता होते हुए भी उन्होंने अपना एक-एक पैसा भारी ब्याज़ के साथ वसूल किया।”

राजिंदरनाथ को याद करते हुए उनके क़रीबी दोस्त अभिनेता बीरबल कहते हैं, “वो बहुत शरीफ़ और ईमानदार शख़्स था। उसके सीधेपन का हर किसी ने फ़ायदा उठाया लेकिन उसने कभी किसी का दिल नहीं दुखाया। तमाम तक़लीफ़ें उठाकर उसने लोगों का एक-एक पैसा चुकता किया”। फ़िल्म ‘द गेट क्रैशर’ के निर्देशक का नाम पूछने पर बीरबल बताते हैं, “जहां तक मुझे याद है, वो फ़िल्म शायद सिकंदर खन्ना डायरेक्ट कर रहे थे”।

राजिंदरनाथ पारसी समुदाय और दक्षिण भारत के निर्माताओं की ईमानदारी और सद्व्यवहार से बेहद प्रभावित थे। उनका कहना था कि मुंबई के निर्माताओं के विपरीत पारसी और दक्षिण के निर्माता कलाकारों को पूरा सम्मान और बिना मांगे समय पर उसका मेहनताना देते हैं।

सूरत (गुजरात) निवासी वरिष्ठ फ़िल्म इतिहासकार श्री हरीश रघुवंशी द्वारा उपलब्ध कराए गए आंकड़ों के मुताबिक़ राजिंदरनाथ ने 1950 के दशक में 9, 1960 के दशक में 70, 1970 के दशक में 67, 1980 के दशक में 84 और 1990 के दशक में 23 अर्थात कुल मिलाकर 253 फ़िल्मों में अभिनय किया। उनकी आख़िरी फ़िल्म ‘लाश’ साल 1998 में प्रदर्शित हुई थी। इसके अलावा वो धारावाहिक ‘हम पांच’ की कुछ शुरूआती कड़ियों में भी नज़र आए थे। पुराने दिनों को याद करते हुए राजिंदरनाथ की आंखें चमक उठी थीं। उन्होंने कहा था, “कश्मीर में मैंने बहुत शूटिंग की। 1960 के दशक में मेरी ज़्यादातर फ़िल्मों की शूटिंग कश्मीर में होती थी। उस ज़माने में मुंबई अपने घर तो मैं दो-चार दिनों के लिए किसी मेहमान की तरह आ पाता था।” 

राजिंदरनाथ के परिवार में पत्नी के अलावा एक बेटा और एक बेटी हैं। जब हमारी मुलाक़ात हुई थी, उन्हें फ़िल्मों से अलग हुए क़रीब 6 साल हो चुके थे। उन दिनों उनका बेटा कतर एयरलाईंस में नौकरी कर रहा था और बेटी ने अपनी पढ़ाई पूरी की ही थी। बड़े भाई प्रेमनाथ और छोटे भाई खलनायक नरेन्द्रनाथ के निधन ने राजिंदरनाथ के दिलोदिमाग़ और सेहत पर गहरा असर डाला था। उनकी ख़ामोशी और उदास चेहरे को देखकर लगता ही नहीं था कि ये वोही राजिंदरनाथ हैं जिनके परदे पर आते ही किसी ज़माने में पूरा हॉल ठहाकों से गूंज उठता था।

राजिंदरनाथ का निधन मुंबई में 13 फ़रवरी 2008 को हुआ।

With the rise of Mehmood in 1960’s all the comedy actors of that era including Johny Walker steadily started losing their sheen. But Rajinder Nath was an exception who started his career almost at the same time as Mehmood’s and successfully gained new heights. Mehmood's stardom had no effect on Rajinder Nath’s career as he had built a unique image for himself.

It took me very long time to reach Rajinder Nath ji for my column ‘kya bhooloon kya yaad karoon’ in the Hindi weekly paper ‘Sahara Samay’. He was not in touch with the ‘Cine & T.V. Artiste’s Association’ (CINTAA) since last few years. CINTAA had his Colaba address in its record but he didn’t reside on that address anymore. After lots of efforts somebody told me that actor Birbal must have an idea about Rajinder Nath ji’s whereabouts as they are close friends. Thus, I successfully reached Rajinder Nath ji through Birbal ji. He now lived in the Orchid Building on 10th Road at Khar (West).

Rajinder Nath Malhotra’s family was originally from Peshawar. His father was a higher cadre Police Officer during British Raj who spent most of his service time in different Indian states. Rajinder Nath Malhotra was born on 8th June 1931 in the town of Tikamgarh in Madhya Prant (now Madhya Pradesh). He completed his schooling in Rewa. Congress leader Arjun Singh was Rajinder Nath’s classmate and close friend. Prithviraj Kapoor was closely related to the Malhotra family and the bond got stronger after Rajinder Nath’s elder sister got married to Raj Kapoor. Rajinder Nath’s younger sister is married to actor Prem Chopra.

Rajinder Nath said, “My elder brother Prem Nath was working in the films in Mumbai. After I completed my schooling, he asked me to shift to Mumbai. I came here in 1947 and joined Prithviraj Kapoor’s theatre company ‘Prithvi Theatre’. I acted in ‘Prithvi Theatre’s plays ‘Deewar’, ‘Pathan’, ‘Shakuntala’ and ‘Ahuti’. My association with ‘Prithvi Theatre’ lasted for 10 years where I befriended the likes of Shammi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, Sajjan, Shankar and Jaikishan”.

According to Rajinder Nath, apart from stage plays he also did small roles in films. Those roles would be so small that no one could take notice of Rajinder Nath’s on-screen presence. He was spending a carefree life under the patronage of his elder brother. He was not at all serious towards his career. Prem Nath was not happy with his carelessness. He was so angry that he ordered Rajinder Nath to leave his home one day.

Rajinder Nath said, “It was a big shock to me. Though bhaisaheb allowed me to live in another house of his yet the problem was how to fulfill other basic needs. Today’s well-known producer Yash Johar also lived with me in the same house and we both were struggling to make it big in life. I had an old model scooter but often we didn’t have money for the petrol. For food we were dependent upon friends and the acquaintances but how long could we survive like this? Constrainedly I had to be serious towards my career. Today I strongly feel that whatever Prem Nath ji did was for my wellbeing only”. 

The first little bit significant role which Rajinder Nath got was in the film ‘Shagoofa’, a 1953 release. This movie was produced by Prem Nath under his own banner ‘P.N.Films’. Prem Nath produced another movie ‘Golcunda Ka Qaidi’ in the year 1954 in which he gave Rajinder Nath the role of the side hero. But both the films flopped. Rajinder Nath got recognition in a small comic role in the movie ‘Hum Sab Chor Hain’ which released in the year 1956. The movie ‘Shararat’ which released in 1959 made this recognition stronger and the same year release ‘Dil Deke Dekho’s grand success made him a star comedian. He never looked back after ‘Dil Deke Dekho’. His comedy in 1961 release movie ‘Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai’ made him popular as ‘Popatlal’ in every household.

Rajinder Nath’s career was on the peak for next 12 years. He worked with almost all big producer-directors during that period and gave many hits like ‘Usne Kaha Tha’, ‘Prem Patra’, ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’, ‘Tere Ghar Ke Saamne’, ‘Ye Raaste Hain Pyar Ke’, ‘Mere Sanam’, ‘Aaye Din Bahaar Ke’, ‘Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan’, ‘An Evening In Paris’, ‘Aaya Sawan Jhoom Ke’, ‘Prince’, ‘Aan Milo Sajna’, ‘Aap Aaye Bahaar Aayi’, ‘Dharkan’, ‘Mela’, and  ‘Ek Baar Muskura Do’. But in the year 1969 Rajinder Nath was seriously injured in a car accident and had to spend many months in the hospital which badly affected his career. In such circumstances he decided to become a producer.

Rajinder Nath said, “In the year 1974 I started shooting my home production ‘The Gate Crasher’ with Randhir Kapoor and Neetu Singh in main lead. Neither had I any experience of production nor despite having spent so many years into the films, could I learn the basic characteristics of the people associated with this industry. Whatever money people asked for during the shoot, I paid to them with open hands. As a result, the film got stalled after 10 days of shoot. Now I was under heavy debt. My struggle started afresh. Whatever small-big roles I got I did, so that I could pay to the creditors. Distributors from Delhi and U.P. compelled me to shed blood-tears. Despite knowing my circumstances, they levied heavy interest and recovered every single paisa from me”.

Remembering his close friend Rajinder Nath, actor Birbal says, “He was a very plane hearted and an honest person. Everybody took advantage of his civility, but he never hurt anybody. He took all the pains to pay his debts”. When asked about the name of the director of ‘The Gate Crasher’, Birbal said, “So far I remember, the movie was being directed by Sikandar Khanna”.

Rajinder Nath was fond of the honesty and good behavior of producers from the Parsi community and the South. He said that contrary to the producers from Mumbai film industry, Parsi and South Indian producers very respectfully treated their actors and paid their remuneration well in time.

As per the data provided by Surat (Gujrat) based very senior film historian Shri Harish Raghuwanshi ji, Rajinder Nath acted in 9 movies in 1950’s, 70 in 1960’s, 67 in 1970’s, 84 in 1980’s and 23 in 1990’s thus in total 253 movies in his entire acting career. His last movie was ‘Laash’ which released in the year 1998. He also acted in some of the initial episodes of Hindi serial ‘Hum Paanch’. Rajinder Nath’s eyes glittered as he remembered his old days. He said, “I shot a lot in Kashmir. Most of my movies in 1960’s were shot in Kashmir. In those days I could come home in Mumbai hardly for 3-4 days as a guest”.

Rajinder Nath’s family comprised of his wife, a son and a daughter. He had already bid adieu to the films 6 years back when we met. His son was working with the Qatar Airlines at that time and his daughter had just completed her studies. Death of his elder brother Prem Nath and younger brother-the famous villain- Narendra Nath had badly affected Rajinder Nath emotionally and physically. Looking at his silent and gloomy face, it was hard to believe that at some point of time this used to be the same rajinder Nath whose mere entry on the big screen used to be enough for the theatre hall to burst into laughter.

Rajinder Nath died in Mumbai on 13th February 2008.
